about

Emilie "Galka" Scheyer, born in Germany in 1889, pursued painting as an adolescent, but eventually found her niche as a promoter/educator, bringing the work of other artists to the attention of the art world and the general public. She had a hand in bringing together Klee, Kandinsky, Jawlensky, and Feininger under the rubric “Blue Four” in 1924; she then traveled to the United States in an attempt to establish them with critics and the public through lecturing, hobnobbing, and sheer effort of will. (Her lifelong friend Lette Valeska averred: “Her commitment to her task [was] so great that she refused to be downed by any adversity. She could always find a spiritual star to steer by.”) Arriving in Los Angeles in 1927 she soon fell into the arms of its small but vibrant avant-garde (including Von Sternberg, John Cage, and Aline Barnsdall)—her first dwelling was Schindler’s legendary Kings Road house. Later, Richard Neutra designed a home for her on top of the Hollywood Hills, which featured a spectacular view. She acquired permission from the city to name her street “Blue Heights Drive.”

lyrics

This life is spinning me ’round—
Good-bye, Motherland.
This life is sitting me down—
Who will hold my hand?

I walk along a new shore—
Will my dream survive?
I’m counting on the Blue Four
To keep it alive—
Blue Heights Drive.

I always found a star to steer by.
I always set out with a clear eye.
My mother gave the faith
To follow my heart;
I followed it to a place
I thought it might thrive—
Blue Heights Drive.

Standing alone at the top of a hill—
Faces I’ve known, they are here with me still.
Let the sun shine down on me and my own;
When will I arrive?
Blue Heights Drive.
