Fearing insurrection, harsher laws came down.

Meeting in secret in the middle of the night,

“No negro shall smoke in any public place, any public square,
Or carry a cane at night, unless old or infirm.”

Turner’s insurrection, printed up and bound.

Thousands liberated along the Underground;
Thousands a belated education found.

Or block a sidewalk, or
Speak insolently to
Any white person, or
Gather in groups of more
